“The Education sector has recognized the need for creating learning environments that nurture a generation of happier and healthier children and young adults. ”

The Education sector has recognized the need for creating learning environments that nurture a generation of happier and healthier children and young adults. Lending its ideas from workplace design there is a need to cover different types of spaces and designs.

This is relevant from the early stages of learning at kindergarten level. As Angela Fergusson states: “The influence of the physical environment on its inhabitants cannot be underestimated. Nowhere is this more important than in the design of day care centres and early learning child care centres.”

Projects like the Penrith public school upgrade by PTW architects shows the impact a well thought through design can have.PTW has designed the classrooms to meet changing pedagogical models, ensuring students can engage in both project-and-enquiry-based learning.” (Pia Sinha)

The need for design for learning in the tertiary sector becomes even more prevalent when reading the following excerpt quoted by David Congram (Breakout spaces that break the traditional paradigm: The University of Canberra).

“International education is already one of our top two services exports, along with tourism, and is one of five key super-growth sectors that will support our transitioning economy into the next decade. The growing importance of international education to Australia is evident from the more than 130,000 jobs it creates and the businesses that benefit from it – directly and indirectly across the retail, hospitality, property sectors and more.”

Creating inspiring learning environments means considering a variety of needs for the different pillars of education.

Spaces include spaces for learning, as classrooms and auditoriums, but also extend to communal spaces in and outdoors as well as hospitality spaces. There is also a whole administrative sector to cover including executive offices. Not to forget spaces with very specific needs as libraries and laboratories.
